Well, I'll start with the story. I've decided to have a massive overhaul and get rid of the stupid alien idea, this is my new iteration:
STORY
Around 1750, a mining corporation (no name yet) was mining (haven't got a place yet, need to do research on that) and discovered a mineral that had massive amounts of energy. The company saw the potential in this pure raw energy and started investing in ways to use it. After a while scientists discovered that it could power almost anything with the right adapters but the mineral itself just wasn't powerful enough to really make a massive world wide impact.
A few years down the line and the corporation finally found a catalyst that they could combine with the mineral to make the energy output multiply by a incredible amount. With this new catalyst, and the new amounts of energy which seemed to never run out, the company started selling whatever it could that would be powered by there new power source. Within a decade the company had become the biggest and most powerful corporation in the world, everything was powered by this new power including whole cities.
Although the power emitting from these minerals seemed to be endless, the mineral itself wasn't and the company new this. They started cutting the ratio of mineral to catalyst by a exponential amount, but this didn't seem a problem. In the height of this new 'golden age' scientists looked at other ways to use the minerals, the toyed with the idea of implanting the mineral in living beings to see if it worked, and it did! People who had this new energy source hardly had to sleep, never got tired, and had a much longer life span. Originally it was the rich who purchased this new fangled longevity solution as the corporation was selling them for a ridiculous amount, but after all the rich folks had bought them they needed new clients. As there was a lot more middle class and poor people the corporation cut the minerals they gave them with the catalyst by even more, there was hardly traces of the mineral.
A few more years down the line and then trouble strikes. At first a couple of the poor people who got the extremely cut version of the mineral start dying...well the lucky ones die. Some of them turn schizophrenic and totally lose their mind, some of them have an extraordinary amount of power and energy before their bodies can't take it and dies and the really unlucky casualty's have their body turned into some kind of mutant animal.
Then even more trouble strikes, the places that had the poor ratio minerals have their power failing, transport no longer works, cites go without power, weapons are unable to shoot, chaos. It's at this time that the reason for all this madness is happening. The catalyst wasn't actually increasing the power output of the mineral but actually absorbing it, the new energy was a bi-product of what was happening. This made the mineral 'die' and there was only a small amount left to mine. With this news even more panic spreads out, people know that once you've got a mineral inside you, you can't go back because your body can't take the energy loss, it's become to dependant. People start turning into savages, the first targets are the rich with the uncut minerals. People turn on them like a pack of wolves, trying to rip out their mineral and use it for themselves. Cites go up in flames as gang wars break out, their is no police force or army as their fighting for their own lives as well.
The corporation protects itself by promising any mercenary who joins them an uncut mineral. The corporation also have weapons that work and are safe behind their walls.
THE PLAYER
The story for the player I haven't finalized yet though, I've got a few options though:
1) A honourable marine that's just got back from a solo mission and has no idea what's going on.
2) A mercenary from the corporation who was knocked unconscious and gets amnesia (or something along the lines)
3) Part of a gang who's out to try and get as much of the minerals as possible (gory/evil version)
4 Part of a gang who's out to try and restore peace (nice/clean version)
Anyway, here are a few of my screenshots that I've started work on. The player wakes up in a dock yard and has to find a way out. This is one of the factorys you'll see first.
