Preperation!

I decided a few weeks ago to start thinking about my FMP, what to do it in, the settings, story and was it going to be single player or multiplayer?

I've now got a firm image in my head of what the game is going to look like to start with and I've just come up with a story which sounds pretty cool. The game is going to be a single player game made in the UT3 engine which is going to be a cross between broken sword and myst. I'm still undecided if I want any NPC's in the game, let alone any enemies. I really just want to show off my level design skills. Your going to have to go around and explore the place finding out what happened.

The story idea I'm going with at the moment (I've got 4 others written down as backup), is just before electricity was invented a meteor crashed down to earth and inside it was millions of larvae type aliens. These posed no threat but were also impenetrable so scientists were unable to really understand them. A few months later and scientists discovered that these were an amazing power source with one of these aliens the size of a tennis ball able to power a whole town indefinitely. Humans entered a super golden age, without a worry for a power source industry triumphed, technology advanced faster then companies could cope with so models for cars, houses etc stayed in the same time zone but the technology behind it was decades ahead, so was born steampunk.

After a few decades, scientists were toying around with the idea of implanting the aliens into humans to see the effect and the result was better then expected. A larvae the size of a grain of rice could give a human all the energy they wanted, they no longer had to sleep and people could keep active for days. Life expectancy went up by 300% and these larvae were now implanted at birth to give the best possible life for a child.

But alas, this golden age had to come to an end at some point, and it came to an abrupt end in 2078 when for no reason what so ever, the larvae started to just die. Scientists couldn't understand why and within a month 80% of the larvae had now died, whole city's around the world were without any power, people's body's couldn't adapt to the need of sleep and to create their own bodily energy's that people just started dying. People were now desperate for the few remaining aliens left alive that massive wars broke out between countries, city's and even houses, people would fight in the streets, even attack own family members and children just so they could get the larvae they needed to survive. Within 3 months, 90% of the Human population had been killed either through lack of energy, dying it battle or just being mugged in the street for their larvae. The world was in tatters and only a handful of people left alive.

You wake up in the water, no idea were you are, what year it is or what has just happened. But you are one of the last remaining humans left alive and you have a living larvae inside of you....
